If you are a North student then you should have received an Earth Day Packet as well as a great 100% recycled newspaper pencil this week! Remember to come up with your “Great Green Idea?” entry for the contest! It can be something you want to do for Earth day, an idea for the future, an idea for now. What idea can you come up with that will help us become Greener at North Elementary? Or Greener in the town of Somerset?

There will be a GREAT GREEN PRIZE awarded to the winners!

Entries are due Monday April 25th. We will collect them until Wednesday April 27th! Winners to be announced Friday April 29th!

North Students will be receiving an Earth Day packet along with a 100% recycled newspaper pencil this week! Packets were dropped off at school today and teachers will be passing them out to their students on Friday of this week.

Earth day is celebrated annually on Friday April 22nd. This year we have a great contest for the kids. The last page of this packet has a “What’s your Great Green Idea” contest sheet. Students should draw their “Great Green Idea” and on the back of the page write a few sentences about it. Students should return their contest entries to their teacher on Monday April 25th. We will collect entries until Wednesday April 27th. Winners will be announced on Friday April 29th. There will be one winner per grade and each winner will receive a “GREAT GREEN PRIZE!”

Happy Earth Day everyone! To learn more about earth day click here: Earth Day 2011

Reading night is a great event at North Elementary every year! It’s also a GREEN event! It allows students to reuse their books and reduce their impact on the environment. Children get to swap books- their old ones for “new” ones for them to read. For every book you bring you can take another gently used book. Don’t throw those old books away- bring them to Reading Night- April 14th 6-8-pm at North and recycle your gently used books!

Did you know you can make your own crayons from old ones? Rip off the papers off your old, short and broken crayons (be sure to recycle all those papers in your paper bin) and then follow these simple instructions!  You’ll need old broken crayons, candy molds, tin cans (soup cans will do) and some popsicle sticks. Click on the link for full intructions!
